Herman Andaya News
The Maui emergency chief steps down after defending the choice to silence the sirens during a wildfire.
According to Mayor Richard Bissen, Chief Herman Andaya resigned due to “health reasons.” His immediate retirement leaves a position open at the top of the emergency department as the devastated island deals with the fallout from the fire that claimed at least 111 lives.Mayor Bissen issued a statement in which he said: “Given the seriousness of the issue we are facing, my staff and I will name a candidate to this critical position as soon as we can, and I look forward to making that announcement soon.
Andaya’s suitability for the position was questioned as a result of the harsh criticism he received for ordering Maui’s citizens to evacuate as the flames got closer to their residences. When questioned by a reporter who claimed that the system may have saved hundreds of lives during a media briefing on Wednesday, the former MEMA chief said he does not regret not sounding the deafening warnings.
The loud sirens, according to Andaya, are typically used to warn of tsunamis, and Hawaiians are trained to move to higher ground when they sound. Wildfires, however, are listed as one of the disasters for which the “all-hazard” approach may be used on the official government website for Hawaii.
Andaya said, “We wouldn’t have been able to help those people up there on the mountaintop, even if we had sounded the siren.
Additionally, he defended his background in the workplace by telling reporters that, prior to accepting the lead role in 2017, he underwent a rigorous screening process and received extensive training. This is the only direct experience Andaya has had with emergency management, despite working with it while employed by the housing department and holding a position in the mayor’s cabinet.
Rescue workers reported that 111 people had been discovered dead as of Thursday after searching through at least 45% of the burn area; however, as authorities continue to search through the debris, it is expected that the number of fatalities will rise.Tens of thousands of homes and businesses still lack electricity, while thousands of displaced residents have found shelter in hotels, Airbnb rentals, and shelters.
Investigations are being conducted to determine what caused the fires, which are currently the worst to occur in the US in more than a century.
