The announcement was made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 4, 2023, at a public rally in Hyderabad. Modi said that the decision would benefit over 9 crore families across the country.
“The Modi government is committed to the welfare of the poor and the marginalized. This decision will help to ease the burden on Ujjwala Yojana beneficiaries,” Modi said.
The increase in subsidy is a significant relief for Ujjwala Yojana beneficiaries, who have been struggling to cope with the rising prices of LPG cylinders. The price of a 14.2 kg LPG cylinder in Delhi is currently Rs 903. The increase in subsidy will reduce the effective price of a cylinder for Ujjwala Yojana beneficiaries to Rs 603.
The PMUY was launched in 2016 with the aim of providing free LPG connections to poor households. The scheme has been a huge success, and over 9 crore families have benefited from it so far.
The increase in subsidy for Ujjwala Yojana beneficiaries is a welcome move by the government. It will help to reduce the financial burden on poor households and make cooking gas more affordable for them.
